Mecklenburg Commissioners should appoint Nick Mackey sheriff now!

Democrats should avoid the media hype and complete the nomination of Nick Mackey as sheriff of Mecklenburg County, as the Party Executive Committee voted on Thursday night. No one can say for certain that Nick Mackey will not be a great sheriff. Even if past mistakes are taken into account, moving forward Mr. Mackey may well be better for the job than anyone. But more important is that the selection process was followed as written and therefore should be accepted. Changing the rules in the middle of the game will only reinforce the assumption by many African Americans that 2007 is not much different from 1907, when poll taxes and other ruses often were used to stifle black political influence. Most of you owe your very positions to loyal black support at the polls. The attempt to pull an end run around black voters now will break bonds that have put Democrats in control of local Mecklenburg County and Charlotte City governments. What will be the reward for black voter loyalty? Mr. Mackey will have three years to prove his critics wrong or right. He can be voted out of office either in the Democratic primary or the general election at that time. For the Democratic Party and the County Board of Commissioners to deny him the opportunity to serve would be a racist affront and an illegal usurpation of the will of black voters, Bob Davis’s strategic nomination of Chipp Bailey notwithstanding.

  1. As a 48 year old Euro-American Conservative Republican I could not agree more. He was elected/appointed as the current system allows. If all rules and regulations under the current structure were followed he should be allowed to serve. If the powers in charge do not like the system…work to change the system. But DO NOT make the current system work to meet your needs. You made this bed, now you have to lie in it. Mr. Baily should have been aggressive and assertive enough to understand the system. To hear him say he wass too busy running the jail is a copout.

  2. Wow, am I glad I don’t live in Mecklenburg County! I can’t believe that I am hearing blacks saying that people who oppose Mackey being installed as sheriff are racists. Those who oppose Mackey for sheriff recognize what some people will not face; Mackey is not qualified for the job and the Democrat activists who pushed through the votes for Mackey don’t care that he’s not qualified – they just want a black sheriff! Whatever happened to the dream that people would be recognized and rewarded for their achievements and their character and the color of their skin would be irrelevant? It’s Democrats who are constantly bearing the drum of racism for the advancement of their own agenda and for their own power, not Republicans.

  3. I live just outside Mecklenburg County and am not really concerned about the politcal scene there but I keep hearing about this Mackey guy and wonder how he could be considered for a law enforcement position, especially the sheriff. If I lived in that jurisdiction I’d be worried about someone with his qualifications having that position and running the jail too.I don’t care if he’s black, white, or green…..something is fishy over there……..

  5. Mackey should be IN jail, not running the jail. It seems that everyone is fixated on the process by which Mackey was elected. The real issue at hand is whether or not he is qualified to hold the Office. (Hint: He’s not. He’s a crook)

  6. Do we want one of the top law enforcement officers of the county to be someone who the Chief of Police stated that he would not hire again? I’m afraid if Nick Mackey is appointed Sheriff what will follow will be lawsuits, further allegations and a huge law enforcement department that will come to a standstill. For those of you who think this is about race only why don’t you ask Norman A. Mitchell why he opposes Nick Mackey. To paraphrase a great man’s statements: “I have a dream that that one day we will live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character.”
